The following military units and organizations have been identified as having a home-base at Nellis:Ģ6/64/65/527/5021 Tactical Operations (Aggressor) SquadronsĤ14 Composite Training Squadron (Red Flag)ĥ49th Joint Training Squadron (Air Warrior)Ĩ20th Civil Engineering Squadron (Red Horse) It employs 1,050 civilians and has a total of 8,500 military personnel, with an annual payroll of over $273 Million. Nellis AFB and its many ranges cover an area of approximately 3,026,700 acres. It was reported in 1949 as Nellis Air Force Base, named in honor of 1st LT William Nellis, a World War II P-47 Fighter Pilot who was killed in action in Europe in December, 1944. There is a minor emphasis on Holloman AFB because there appears to be an operational connection between the two Air Forces bases.īackground: In July, 1941 Nellis was activated as an Army Air Forces Flexible gunnery School.
